She Always Wins this Game

MOMMY, WHY DID YOU STOP?

Because there was a stop sign.

WHY DID YOU GO?

Well, did you see that red light flashing?

YES.

Well, that meant that I had to stop, and as soon as there were no cars coming from the other directions, I could go.

WHY THAT RED LIGHT FLASHING?

It's to let you know there is a stop sign there.

WHY?

Because the people who built the road put it there to make sure all the drivers know what to do.

WHY?

So that we don't crash into each other.

WHY?

So that we don't get hurt and damage our cars.

WHY?

[Giving up] It's the laws of physics.

MOMMY, WHY YOU LAUGHING?

  1. When I my son and I were walking out the Children’s museum one day back when he was about four years of age the following exchange occurred.

    Him: Why are we leaving?
Me: Because it is time to go home.
Him: Why are we leaving? (again)
Me: (wearily) So you can play with your cars.
    Him: Why?
Me: Because that is what you like to do.
    Him: Why?

A lady walking close by overheard us and burst out laughing.

  2. Usually, at this point, I turn it around and ask them a direct question. Like, "Can you think of any reasons why people don't like to get hurt?" Seems to do the trick most of the time.
